A car chase through southern Beaufort County ended early Saturday morning when the suspect crashed into a tree in Oldtown Bluffton, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.
An S.C. Highway Patrol trooper tried to pull over a tan Lincoln Aviator on Okatie Highway in the Lemon Island area about 1:50 a.m., the report said. The driver led him on a chase until he collided with a tree on Bluffton's Lawrence Street near Calhoun Street, according to the report.
The vehicle was badly damaged, but the driver, a 31-year-old Columbia man, suffered only cuts to his arms and legs, the report said. While in handcuffs, he tried to run away, but was caught by officers.
When the officers escorted him back to the car, the man appeared to be losing consciousness, the report said. He was airlifted to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, where his condition was not available Saturday.

It was not clear why the trooper tried to pull over the Aviator. Charges have not been filed in the incident against the driver or his three passengers, who are from Okatie, Bluffton and Burton.
Additional information was not available from the Highway Patrol late Saturday.
