A shoplifter heeded a deputy's order to stop running Wednesday, but only when he found himself stuck between two barbed-wire fences, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.
The 35-year-old Hilton Head Island man tried to steal a phone charger from a William Hilton Parkway convenience store at about 11:45 a.m. by shoving the merchandise down the front of his pants, the report said. When a manager confronted him, he removed the charger, threw it onto the counter and left, according to the report.
A deputy spotted the man in the area of Marine Side Drive and chased him until the suspect jumped a barbed-wire fence, the report said. When the man saw another fence lay ahead, he stopped.
The man, who was heavily intoxicated, was charged with public disorderly conduct, loitering and shoplifting, according to the jail log. He was in the Beaufort County Detention Center on Thursday with bail set at $2,852.
