Investigators have little information about a highway shooting that took place Sunday on Hilton Head Island, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office release.
Just before noon, witnesses reported shots fired from a white SUV into a gray Chrysler 300 as the vehicles traveled on U.S. 278, the release said. Deputies searched the area, but the vehicles could not be found.
Two hours later, Bluffton Police Department officers were called to Dubois Lane, where a 49-year-old woman told them her rented, gray Chrysler 300 had been damaged by gunshots. Officers learned that the woman's 24-year-old daughter was driving the vehicle earlier in the day, when it was damaged, according to the release.
The daughter was returning from picking up a friend at Hilton Head Gardens when the car was shot at by the occupants of a white SUV, shattering the car's rear windows and damaging the windshield and body.
The woman's daughter said she had received a call from an unidentified male friend asking for a ride from Hilton Head Gardens. Just before she arrived, an argument broke out between the friend and two other unidentified, black males. After picking up her friend, the woman was followed by at least two people in a white SUV. The vehicle's occupants fired several rounds toward the Chrysler while driving westbound on U.S. 278. The shots shattered both windows and caused damage to the windshield and vehicle body.
No injuries were reported.
Investigators have not identified suspects in the shooting.
