The Town of Hilton Head Island reminds residents that open burning of yard debris has not been permitted since Nov. 10.
Some open burning is still legal with certain restrictions:
- Outdoor cooking in fixed or portable barbecues, food-smoking units and outdoor stoves.
- Outdoor fireplaces that received a town-issued building permit and are properly maintained.
- Recreational fires for pleasure or religious, ceremonial or similar purposes.
Residents may burn the following: natural vegetation such as wood, twigs and pine cones; fireplace logs; and charcoal. Residents may not burn waste lumber, pine straw, leaves, grass or garbage.
