A Bluffton woman was charged with shoplifting and animal cruelty Friday for trying to take nearly $3,000 in merchandise from a Hilton Head Island store -- and leaving her dog in her locked car while she was inside, according to a report from the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
Surveillance cameras indicate the 43-year-old woman tried to take $2,901 worth of handbags and jewelry from Belk on Shelter Cove Lane. Footage showed her loading the items in a cart, taking them to a fitting room and exiting the fitting room 20 minutes later carrying only her personal bag, according to the report.
Deputies found the dog in her locked car, parked outside the store while she attempted to take the items.
She was released Monday from the Beaufort County Detention Center on a $6,092 bond, according to the jail log.
