A body discovered Saturday in the Jarvis Creek Preserve has been identified as a 35-year-old Hilton Head Island man.
Pascual Rubio Garcia of Little Garden Path was reported missing Sept. 17 by relatives. He was last seen alive Sept. 14 by coworkers, the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office said Tuesday.
Rubio Garcia's body was found Saturday evening by fishermen in the marsh west of Spanish Wells Road and Humane Way.
Coworkers said Rubio Garcia told them he was going to Ridgeland to watch a boxing match when he left work Sept. 14. Relatives reported him missing after they could not reach him and discovered he also had not reported to work Saturday.
Never miss a local story.
Rubio Garcia's dark blue 2002 Dodge Durango -- South Carolina plate number ADA 793 -- is still missing, the Sheriff's Office reported. It is being treated as stolen. Investigators consider Garcia's disappearance and death suspicious, although a cause of death has not yet been released.
Atilana Adane, who also lives on Little Garden Path, said Rubio Garcia had moved to the area at least five years ago and once worked with her in the flower department of The Greenery, a Hilton Head Island-based landscaping company.
Family and friends are gathering Tuesday and Wednesday night to remember him, she said.
"He was a nice person," said Adane, 38. "I don't know what happened."
Anyone with any information about Rubio Garcia's disappearance, death or vehicle can call investigator Cpl. J. Moran at 843-255-3422 or Crime Stoppers at 866-CRIME-SC.
