A man reported the theft of $2,700 in cash from a Hilton Head Island resort hotel room after he left the money in a briefcase. The thief left $1,000 behind, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.
The theft happened sometime between Jan. 19 and Jan. 25 from a room at the Coral Sands Resort off Nassau Street. The victim did not report the theft until Tuesday. He told deputies that at some point during his stay, the money was taken from his briefcase, which was stored behind a dresser in the room. The briefcase had $3,700 in it when he arrived. He was unsure why the thief left $1,000 behind.
A maintenance team visited his room during his stay to fix a television, but the victim’s family was in the room when the crew was there.
The victim said there were no signs of forced entry.

Clarification: A previous version of this story incorrectly stated that the theft happened at the Spinnaker Resort, rather than the Coral Sands Resort due to incorrect information printed in a Sheriff’s Office report.
