Beaufort County deputies are investigating an incident reported Saturday by a man who said he found a 9 mm handgun in a wooded area near Hilton Head Island High School.
The man told a deputy that his nephew was hanging out with a small group of children near the basketball courts at the Hilton Head Island Recreational Association Center on Friday around 11 a.m., according to a Beaufort County Sheriff’s Office report.
The man’s nephew said he saw two children running through the parking lot of the school toward the back parking area closest to the Hilton Head High School field house on Wilborn Road. The pair ran toward the trail that leads to the Allenwood sub division, the report said.
As they ran into the wooded area, one of the children was seen throwing a black handgun into the woods, the report said.
The man’s nephew told him about the incident, and he found the handgun on Saturday, the report said.
When the handgun was turned over to the Sheriff’s Office, a deputy found one of two rounds of ammunition in the weapon “jammed very hard backwards into the barrel of the gun,” the report said. The other round was loaded into the long extended length of the weapons’ magazine, the report said. The deputy had to extract the ammunition in the department’s armor room, the report said.
Lt. Col. Bill Neill of the Sheriff’s Office said Monday that the owner of the gun has been identified along with all parties involved in the incident.
No charges had been filed as of Monday, The investigation is ongoing, Neill said.
“We are taking the incident very seriously,” Neill said. “We've identified the one that threw it down and currently no charges have been made and it’s still under investigation.”
