A charity that aimed to help jobless veterans has been banned from soliciting in South Carolina for 15 years and paid an administrative fine of $5,000, according to a news release from the S.C. Secretary of State.
Veterans Support Organization was under investigation for failing to register its employees as professional solicitors, which is required by the state's Solicitation of Charitable Funds Act. The Secretary of State's Office also alleged the charity misrepresented the amount it spent on charitable programs.
Rather than registering its employees, the organization agreed to a settlement, which included that it would exit South Carolina. As part of the settlement, the organization did not admit any wrongdoing.
The Secretary of State's Office asks anyone who sees Veterans Service Organization soliciting funds to call 803-734-1728.
