A North Carolina man drowned off of Harbor Island on Tuesday, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office news release.
Matthew Auten, 50, of Swannanoa, N.C., died as a result of accidental drowning, Coroner Ed Allen said Tuesday night.
The Lady's Island and Fripp Island fire departments responded at about 3:30 p.m. to a report of three people -- Auten's wife and two children -- stuck on the sandbar off Harbor and Hunting islands. The three were rescued.
Authorities then discovered a fourth person was missing.
Auten's body was recovered on the shore of Harbor Island shortly afterward, the Sheriff's Office said.
The Sheriff's Department is investigating the incident.
