A Beaufort man was shot Monday near St. Paul's Church Road, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office news release.
The victim, a 38-year-old man, told deputies he was walking near the St. Paul Baptist Church in Beaufort when he met two black men in their early 20s, the release said.
An altercation ensued, and the victim was shot in the lower torso, the release said. The victim told deputies he never saw the gun and did not remember what happened after being shot.
The victim was taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital for treatment, according to the release.
The victim's friend told deputies he had dropped off the victim at Beaufort Mobile Home Park on Parris Island Gateway about 8:30 p.m. Monday, the release said. About an hour later, the victim called his friend saying he had been shot.
The friend picked the victim up near from the mobile home park and called authorities.
The Sheriff's Office is investigating the incident.
Deputies searched the location but did not find evidence of the shooting, the release said.
