A Varnville man choked his girlfriend in Burton and attempted to smother her with a pillow after she found messages on his phone from another woman and locked him out of the bedroom, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report.
Willie James Stokes, 24, was charged Monday with criminal domestic violence of a high and aggravated nature.
The victim stated she returned at about 2 a.m. Monday to the home she and Stokes share in Burton and found the messages on Stokes' phone, the report said.
The victim told deputies she did not discuss the messages with Stokes, but went to her room and locked the door. When the victim would not let Stokes in, he kicked in the door, the report said.
Stokes began choking her and put a pillow over her face, the report said.
The victim escaped, but as she tried to drive away, Stokes punched the car window and broke the driver-side mirror and door handle, the report said.
Stokes was being held for prosecution Tuesday at the Beaufort County Detention Center, with bail set at $15,000, according to the jail log.
