A 71-year-old motel worker was robbed at gunpoint by a man he was attempting to help Monday night on St. Helena Island, according to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office advisory.
The victim told deputies a man with a handgun forced him to open the cash register at the Quality Inn on Sea Island Parkway before 10:30 p.m., the advisory said. The suspect took the cash drawer and ran toward Sea Island Parkway, leaving the motel employee unharmed.
The motel worker said he first saw the suspect loitering outside the building, and went to offer assistance to the man, the release said. The suspect replied that he was looking for a friend's room, before brandishing the handgun and directing the victim back inside.
The suspect is described as a black male, 30 to 40 years old, 6-feet, 180 pounds, wearing dark clothing.
