The contractor for a S.C. Department of Transportation road paving project in Beaufort expects to move quicker this week than expected.
Preferred Materials Inc. of Savannah was able to rearrange its schedule and free up crews to focus on the Beaufort project, according to a city news release.
Work has been underway on Waddell Road and Battery Creek Drive, and should be wrapped up by Tuesday, according to the release. Under the original schedule, all the work would have been completed in September.
On Wednesday, crews are expected to move to North Street, near New Street, and work west toward Charles Street. Parts of Charles Street are also under construction for unrelated work -- installation of new traffic signals.
"The paving contractor had a cancellation somewhere else, so they are able to take care of our Beaufort road projects sooner than originally scheduled," city manager Scott Dadson said in the release. "It doesn't happen that way very often, and we are happy to get this work done."
The updated paving schedule, which is subject to change:
- Work on Battery Creek Road, from Oak Haven to Mossy Oaks Drive, should be completed by Tuesday.
- Work on North Street in downtown Beaufort, from East Street to Bay Street, should begin Wednesday.
- Work on Charles Street in downtown Beaufort, from Bay Street to Boundary Street, should start about March 19.
The Charles Street paving work could also begin sooner than anticipated.
The work likely will cause temporary lane closures and traffic delays. Alternate routes are recommended when possible, Dadson said.
The work is part of a federally funded paving project coordinated by DOT that started in the fall. Crews with APAC Inc. left after paving Bay and Lafayette streets to work on another project.
Preferred Materials resumed the project at the beginning of March.
