Following a rash of break-ins into unlocked cars in northern Beaufort County, the Sheriff's Office on Wednesday urged residents to lock their vehicles.
Seven neighborhoods were hit by theft this month -- Cat Island, Battery Shores, Iron Gate, Mink Point, Royal Pines, Shell Point and Tanglewood. In all, 72 vehicles were broken into, all of them unlocked, a news release said.
Nearly all of the thefts occurred between midnight and 5 a.m., the release said.
No suspects have been identified, but several witnesses have reported seeing suspicious white men walking or driving through the neighborhoods. The Sheriff's Office and the Beaufort Police Department are investigating, the release said.
Never miss a local story.
Anyone with information on the thefts is asked to call investigators at 843-255-3416 or S.C. Crime Stoppers at 888-274-6372.
