University of South Carolina assistant history professor J. Brent Morris will present the life of "The Most Hated Man in Beaufort County: William Henry Brisbane" at 3 p.m. Dec. 18 at the Coastal Discovery Museum on Hilton Head Island.
A planter in Beaufort, Brisbane was born into the Lowcountry aristocracy and was one of the state's most passionate defenders of slavery, whether from the pulpit, in the pages of his pro-slavery newspaper, or in public speeches and debates, according to a museum news release.
On Jan. 1, 1863, Brisbane was given the assignment of publicly reading the Emancipation Proclamation to an audience that included some men and women who had once been his slaves.
Cost is $7 per person. Reservations are required for the adults-only program by calling 843-689-6767, extension 223. The museum is at 70 Honey Horn Drive.
