One man is dead and another is in police custody following a shooting Friday night in the Mossy Oaks neighborhood in Beaufort, according to police.
The shooting occurred about 9:30 p.m. near the intersection of Hookstra Drive and Mossy Oaks Road, City of Beaufort Police Department Deputy Chief Dale McDorman said.
The names of the victim, who is a Marine, and a suspect were not released, but McDorman said charges might come early Saturday morning. The suspect is from Shell Point, and may be friends with the residents of the home near where the shooting occurred, he said. The residents were not involved.
The cause of the shooting was not immediately clear, he said. Neighbors reported hearing up to 10 shots. Two handguns were recovered at the scene.
It appears the shooting occurred in a yard off Hookstra Drive, McDorman said. It was not clear if the victim fired any shots.
When police arrived, a silver sedan was parked in the middle of Hookstra Drive. The victim was in the backseat and taken by ambulance to Beaufort Memorial Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. A friend, who was uninjured, was in the driver's seat.
Neighbor Crystal Stepp was sitting in her carport when she heard the shots. She said she saw a man running down the street and ran inside to get her children, take them to her in-laws' home next door, and call 911.
She saw the silver sedan go by three times before stopping in the road. She heard people shouting, "Put down that gun!" and saw two people run toward a Hookstra Drive home and two head down Mossy Oaks Road.
Stepp said the area is usually very quiet.
"For something like this to happen here is unbelievable," she said.
Neighbor Gerald Wynn said he has lived in the area for 30 years, and "never had anything like this happen."
He was sitting inside, watching a television program about President John F. Kennedy's assassination when he heard about five shots.
