Beaufort High School shortstop Michelle Brown committed to softball seven years go.
Her persistence paid off this week, when she signed her National Letter of Intent with North Greenville University to play for the NCAA Division II Crusaders. Brown, who has played travel softball since she was 10, caught the eye of Crusaders coach Sarah Hall at a tournament five months ago.
Hall liked Brown's speed and ability as a left-handed slap-hitter. Hall offered Brown last week, and Brown called to commit Sunday night.
She signed on Monday night to ensure everything was in place by the end of early signing period Wednesday and celebrated with a ceremony Tuesday in the Beaufort High media center.
Brown chose North Greenville over interest from USC Sumter and College of Charleston. She liked that North Greenville had her major, health and wellness.
"I like that they're a growing school," Brown said. "They have a lot to offer me."
Hall told Brown she might play as a freshman in a utility role. Brown believes she could fit at shortstop, second base and outfield.
Brown plays fall ball with the South Carolina Bandits after playing for the Carolina Fire during the summer. She expects good things from her Beaufort High team during the spring.
The Eagles under coach Doug Plank are coming off a run to the Class 4-A playoffs.
"I'm really excited about it," she said. "We have a lot of seniors this year. I know we're going to be putting everything we've got into it. We're going to work hard and go as far as we can."
Brown batted .556 as a junior, with 38 steals. She was an All-Region 8-AAAA selection the past three seasons.
"Without question, she will thrive at the college level," Plank said Monday. "Her team is very proud of her."
