Fire destroyed a home early Tuesday on St. Helena Island, but no injuries were reported.
Firefighters arrived at the burning home on Folly Road shortly after 1:30 a.m., said Lady's Island-St. Helena Fire District spokesman Lee Levesque. The homeowner called the fire department from inside the home after waking up to the smell of smoke and the crackling of flames, Levesque said.
The fire was contained in 15 minutes and extinguished in about 25, Levesque said.
Emergency responders from the fire department, Beaufort County EMS and the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office were on the scene for nearly four hours, and the fire's cause is under investigation. Investigators needed to sift through a large amount of rubble and were still trying to determine the cause at 3 p.m. Tuesday, Levesque said.
Levesque did not know how many people were displaced by the fire.
