A family of seven was burned out of its home Monday afternoon on St. Helena Island.
The fire started around 4:30 p.m., and none of the family was in the home at 10 Legree Road at the time, according to Lee Levesque, spokesman for the Lady's Island-St. Helena Fire District.
It took 30 minutes to extinguish the blaze, he said. The cause of the fire is still being investigated.
The family of one adult and six children is being helped by the American Red Cross.
The Red Cross provided and adult and six children with temporary housing and money to replace food lost in the fire, according to a news release. The Red Cross also provided money to replace clothing and provide comfort kits containing personal hygiene items and referrals to partnering agencies.
On average, the American Red Cross Palmetto Region responds to a disaster every 6.5 hours, the release said.
