A Daufuskie Island man was arrested Aug. 23 after Beaufort County Sheriff's Office deputies found nine grams of cocaine and crack cocaine in a cooler on the back of his golf cart during a traffic stop.
Alfred Smith, 57, was pulled over around 7:30 p.m. when he failed to signal a left turn from Haig Point Road onto Cooper River Landing Road.
The deputy identified Smith from his driver's license. The deputy said he had received several anonymous complaints in recent months about the same man being a known drug dealer, according the Sheriff's Office.
According to the report, the deputy asked to search Smith's golf cart when he noticed the driver seemed nervous and kept glancing at the cooler and grocery bags on the back of the cart. Smith gave permission for the search.
The officer found eight bags of crack cocaine and one bag of powdered cocaine -- each weighing approximately one gram -- in the cooler. Smith said he bought the drugs for $600 from a "young black male with dreadlocks" on Hilton Head Island and was bringing them back for friends, the report said.
Smith was arrested and charged with two counts of possession with intent to distribute. He posted bond of $20,000 on the charges and was released from the Beaufort County Detention Center on Aug. 24.
