A South Carolina business is expanding into the Beaufort area and will bring research and development jobs that pay above the state average, according to Kim Statler of the Lowcountry Economic Alliance.
An announcement about the business, code-named "Project H2O," is scheduled for 3:30 p.m. Wednesday at 20 Eleanor Fine Road, where the business will operate, Statler said.
Statler would not provide the name of the business, specifics about what it will do or the number of jobs it is expected to create.
"They do research and development for their customers and take designs and turn them into products for their customers," she said.
Never miss a local story.
Statler would not say whether economic incentives were used to lure the company.
She said the business is not related to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort, which is across the highway, but it is related to industries that the alliance, Beaufort County and the city of Beaufort are trying to attract to the area.
Company representatives, some of its clients, and state and local leaders are expected at Wednesday's announcement, Statler said.
The business will operate from a warehouse already on the property, Statler said.
She added that the jobs created would pay above the state average of about $16 per hour.
The company will hire locally, and training opportunities will be available, she said. The alliance's Transitional Workforce Educational Assistance Collaborative, an agency created to assist with training military personnel leaving the service, will be involved, she said.
Beaufort Mayor Billy Keyserling said he has been helping to court the company since Statler first brought it to his attention.
"The goal was finding where can these people go," he said. "They need a building; they need room to grow, and I said, 'I know of a building.'"
