Staff photographers often shoot dozens of images until getting the one that best tells the story. "Outtakes" features a photograph that wasn't selected to go with the original assignment, but captured an interesting moment.
Staff photographer Delayna Earley on the photo:
The original assignment: I was asked to go to Hunting Island State Park and walk the beach until I found pieces of foundation from the old beach houses that used to be on the island. In all, I walked about 4 miles.
The outtake: As I walked, I came across a number of interesting things. One of them was this horseshoe crab shell lying in a patch of sand. I took a photo of the shell with my iPhone and manipulated the picture with a filter, which altered the contrast and coloring of the photograph slightly.
