So far, it's been a heck of a summer for Bryson Nimmer.
The rising junior at Hilton Head Christian Academy heads into this week's AJGA Hank Haney IJGA Open at Chechessee Creek Golf Club on a bit of a hot streak.
Not 10 days ago, Nimmer birdied the third playoff hole to win the Jimmy Self Invitational at Greenwood Country Club.
Then, on Thursday, Nimmer finished at even par to tie for 11th in the SCGA Junior Championship at the Country Club of Lexington.
"I'm starting to learn how to score," Nimmer said Monday afternoon on the Chechessee Creek range. "My driver is under control, and I'm finding the fairways. That means more birdie looks, and of course, the short game is the key."
Nimmer, a student at Junior Players Golf Academy, has been traveling a lot lately for tournaments and said he is glad to be playing close to home this week.
"I get to sleep in my own bed," Nimmer said, "and I have a feel for the golf course."
One of four Eagles golfers named to the SCISAA All-State team, Nimmer thinks the level of competition in this week's AJGA event won't be much different than he has faced in the last two S.C. junior golf events.
"South Carolina has a really strong junior golf program," Nimmer said.
Among the junior golfers taking part this week are several with area ties, including Hilton Head Island resident Will Miles, Bluffton's Alec Weary, Hilton Head Christian's Anna Lesemann Eddy and Bluffton's Kasidy Beckel.
There are also several Hank Haney International Junior Golf Academy students who call Beaufort County home who are in the field, including Tennoshin Ogawa (Japan), Saravit Kerdsinchai (Thailand), Austin Maher (Canada), Taiga Fujii (Japan), Ana Paula Valdes (Mexico), Phyllis Tang (Singapore) and Rei Nakatani (Japan).
No matter the competition, Nimmer has an idea of what he needs to do at Chechessee Creek to be successful this week.
"I've got to hit my irons well and put some balls on these tiny greens," Nimmer said. "The key is to control the irons ... and hopefully, I can make some putts."
