Students at Whale Branch Middle School hold Norman Kirkland Day to remember fellow student who drowned.
Sheila Kirkland, mother of Norman Kirkland, a Whale Branch Middle School seventh-grader who drowned on May 11, admires the orange duct tape eighth-grader Adrian Manigo was wearing Monday on his face as a tribute to her son. Monday was Norman Kirkland Day at the school, and students wore Clemson orange or camouflage clothing in remembrance of Norman, who loved both Clemson and the outdoors. In addition, an artificial oyster reef students built last week behind the school on the banks of the Whale Branch River was dedicated to Norman and named "Kirkland's Reef."
