Two fires -- one on St. Helena Island and one in Burton -- destroyed mobile homes early Thursday.
The Lady's Island-St. Helena Fire District was called at about 3 a.m. to a fire at a mobile home on Edding White Road.
District spokesman Lee Levesque said the fire was large, but the department had it under control within 25 minutes.
"It got a head start before we got there," he said.
Levesque said the home was destroyed. Both Levesque and Sgt. Robin McIntosh of the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office said the cause of the fire has not been determined. It is not considered suspicious, McIntosh said.
The American Red Cross was called to assist the two people displaced by the fire, Levesque said. One of them was the brother of the homeowner, according to a Sheriff's Office report. The 49-year-old man told deputies he was renovating the mobile home, which had no power.
In the second blaze, the Burton Fire District responded at 5:45 a.m. at In the Bay Mobile Home Park on Shanklin Road, near Laurel Bay Road.
District spokesman Daniel Byrne said a maintenance worker at the park discovered the fire. No one was home at the time.
Byrne said the home was destroyed. The fire threatened but did not damage two nearby homes; the family that lived in one was evacuated. The other home was unoccupied. Crews were on the scene for several hours, Byrne said.
The cause of that fire is under investigation.
