A Beaufort firefighter completed what he called a "lifelong dream" last weekend, earning a master's degree from The Citadel after going back to school more than six years ago.
Capt. Reece Bertholf graduated with a master's of business administration May 4, more than six years after he started as a community college student at Technical College of the Lowcountry in Beaufort.
He graduated from TCL with associate degrees in business and fire service administration. Bertholf was the student commencement speaker in 2008 and a member of the school's Phi Theta Kappa honor society chapter.
He enrolled at University of South Carolina Beaufort after completing his degrees at TCL. In 2012, he graduated from USCB with a bachelor's degree in business administration.
Never miss a local story.
Bertholf continued to excel at The Citadel, graduating from the school with a 4.0 GPA. He also was inducted into the Beta Gamma Sigma honor society, a business-specific group that requires members in master's programs to be in the top 20 percent of their classes.
A Marine Corps veteran and Minnesota native, Bertholf joined the Beaufort Fire Department as a full-time firefighter in August 2001 after he was honorably discharged from the Marines. He began volunteering for the department in May 2000.
