A man awaiting trial for attempted murder in Allendale County has been charged with trying to steal a Beaufort police officer's gun.
Trenton Smalls, 22, of Fairfax was charged Tuesday with attempted unlawful possession of a firearm. Smalls tried to steal the gun Saturday after two patrol officers were called to a loud party on Congress Street and were confronted by a large group of "uncooperative party-goers," according to the Beaufort Police Department's Facebook page .
Smalls approached the officers from behind and tried to take one of the officers' gun from its holster, causing the officer to lose his balance, police said. The officer tried to arrest Smalls, but a scuffle ensued, and a group helped Smalls escape.
A witness identified Smalls, and investigators later determined he was wearing a GPS ankle monitor, according to Cpl. Hope Able. Smalls apparently wore the monitor as a condition of his release on bond from the Allendale County Detention Center. He is awaiting trial for two counts of attempted murder and a charge of assaulting a police officer while resisting arrest.
Smalls was tracked to his brother's home, where he was arrested Tuesday without incident, Able said. He is being held for prosecution in the Beaufort County Detention Center, according to the jail log.
