A vehicle ran off the road, down a steep bluff and into the marsh at Bellamy Curve -- where Beaufort's Boundary Street turns into Carteret Street -- at about 9:30 a.m. Monday.
One person was in the vehicle and was removed by emergency responders and taken to Beaufort Memorial Hospital. The driver was treated and released, according to spokeswoman Courtney McDermott.
A first attempt to tow the white Mercury Mountaineer failed when the tow line snapped. The vehicle was stuck behind an embankment several feet high. A second tow truck was brought, in and crews dug out the embankment. The SUV was removed by about 10:50 a.m.
Traffic was diverted for more than an hour while the vehicle was removed.

The cause of the crash was not immediately known. No skid marks were visible on the road.
Beaufort/Port Royal Fire Department, Beaufort County EMS and the city of Beaufort Police Department responded to the scene.
