Two people were hospitalized after a head-on collision at the intersection of Robert Smalls Parkway and Parris Island Gateway this afternoon, authorities confirmed.
A GMC Sierra pickup truck traveling on Parris Island Gateway and a Mazda sedan making a turn onto Robert Smalls Parkway towards Beaufort collided as both cars continued through the intersection during a signal change, Beaufort Police Chief Matt Clancy said.
The driver of the Mazda sedan was trapped in the car and had to be extricated by Burton Fire and Rescue, Battalion Chief Matt Michel said.
The two taken to the hospital were in the Mazda. Neither Clancy nor Michel knew the extent of either person's injuries.
Clancy said traffic on both roads was shut down briefly to let ambulances and tow trucks reach the scene.
