A drive-by shooting in Beaufort drove two women and two young children from their home in fear of their safety Saturday, and Beaufort County Sheriff's Office investigators are searching for suspects and a motive.
No one was harmed during the 11 p.m. shooting into the residence on Bonaire Circle South, where a 44-year-old woman, her 21-year-old daughter, and boys ages 4 and 7 were staying, the Sheriff's Office said Monday.
Several witnesses in the Bonaire Estates neighborhood reported seeing a dark-colored sedan with two black males driving slowly down the road. When the car approached the mobile home located at 108 Bonaire Circle South, the passenger opened fire and discharged several rounds, according to a news release.
The car quickly sped away, turning left on nearby Parris Island Gateway. The two women and two children inside fled to a family member's home shortly afterward, where deputies spoke to them, a Sheriff's Office news release said.
Deputies also found spent shell casings outside of the home.
Neighbor Helen Kelly lives down the road and said she heard the shots. She and several neighbors watched the investigation unfold from her driveway well into Sunday morning.
A Beaufort County sheriff's deputy lives next door to the home that was shot into, she and other neighbors said.
Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Robin McIntosh said investigators do not yet know if or why the family was targeted.
"They advised they didn't know anyone who would want to do this," said Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Robin McIntosh. "We don't know what the motive for it was."
Shirley Woods, who also lives on Bonaire Circle South, said the neighborhood has seen its fair share of criminal activity in the 27 years she was lived there.
