A plan to build a new Publix grocery store on Lady's Island calls for the re-zoning and annexation of a road for parking and access to the store.
The Metropolitan Planning Commission, a joint-municipal board with representatives from the city of Beaufort, town of Port Royal and Beaufort County, will consider and make a recommendation on the annexation and rezoning of Inlet Road during a 5:30 p.m. meeting at Beaufort City Hall, 1911 Boundary St.
Designs for the building call for a 54,000-square-foot store at the intersection of Sea Island Parkway and Lady's Island Drive. It would replace the 37,000-square-foot store that's currently on Sea Island Parkway across from the planned store's site.
Inlet Road is owned by the state, as are most roads in the city and county. City Council approved a resolution Tuesday to request the state abandon ownership so it could annex and rezone it.
"We have no reason to believe they wouldn't abandon it with glee," attorney David Tedder said on behalf of developers for the project last week.
The commission will also consider a recommendation to change Greenlawn Drive in Beaufort from a main street to a neighborhood street.
