Yajaira Benet-Smith, a Beaufort resident and volunteer with Citizens Opposed to Domestic Abuse has been named the S.C. Coalition Against Domestic Violence and Sexual Assult Volunteer of the Year.
CODA executive director Kristin Dubrowski said in a news release Benet-Smith is an ambassador between CODA and Spanish-speaking communities. She often does outreach to inform survivors of CODA's services, and helps interpret.
She also frequently volunteers with CODA's children's counselor to conduct intakes with Spanish-speaking parents so their children can receive counseling.
"I think this is the second time I won something," Benet-Smith said in a statement. "In this case, it means a lot to me, as I feel to be the lucky one for being in an area where collaboration is so important. I am very fortunate to be able to add my little grain. Thanks to everyone for the nomination and the award -- I love it!"
