A Hardeeville woman accused of stealing and using credit cards of an elderly hospice patient on Hilton Head Island failed to turn herself in to authorities Thursday.
The Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Friday asked the public for help locating 31-year-old Shamika K. Smart.
In a news release, the Sheriff's Office said an 80-year-old Hilton Head woman staying at Hawthorne Inn on Main Street, where Smart worked, reported three credit cards missing Jan. 21.
An investigation found Smart and her aunt, 51-year-old Fannette R. Housey used the cards to make purchases in the area totaling more than $10,000, according to the release.
Smart was employed at Hawthorne Inn as a medical technician and was entrusted with caring for the woman, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Housey was arrested Feb. 15th on one count of financial transaction fraud and was released on bond. Smart had arranged to turn herself into investigators Thursday, but she failed to show.
Investigators are asking anyone with information about Smart's whereabouts to contact Investigator Sgt. L. Albertin at 843-255-3413 or Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC (274-6372) or text the word TIPSC with a message to CRIMES (274637).
Smart is wanted on one count of exploitation of a vulnerable adult. Her last known address is 13 Bush Ave. in Hardeeville. She is black, about 5-feet-3-inches tall and weighs 125 pounds.
