Students from St. Helena Elementary School conduct a sit-in Thursday while learning about the civil rights movement in South Carolina at Penn Center on St. Helena Island. The students, along with others from Bluffton and H.E. McCracken middle schools, watched a short documentary on the movement and listened to retired Judge Joseph McDomick talk about his experiences. Students were later segregated by the color of their clothes and had to enter separate doors to go to lunch. "I wanted to give them a true feel, something that's not in their textbooks," said Victoria Smalls, director of history and culture at Penn Center.
