A 31-year-old Hardeeville man remains hospitalized after he was shot at a Hilton Head Island apartment complex Sunday afternoon, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
The Sheriff's Office said no description of the shooters at Hilton Head Gardens is available, and they continue to search for witnesses who will cooperate with its investigation.
Deputies arrived at the complex at 4:30 p.m. after several people reported shots were fired at a pond near the complex, according to a news release.
While investigating the reports, deputies were notified that a gunshot victim had just arrived at Hilton Head Hospital.
The injured man told investigators that he and a friend had gone to the apartments to visit a woman he did not identify and heard gunshots behind them as they were walking, the release said. His friend, who was not injured, took him to the hospital. Neither could describe the shooter or shooters. The Sheriff's Office said no motive has been established; it has not released whether or not investigators believe the two men were targeted. According to an incident report, the man was shot in the chest, leg and abdomen.
Sheriff's Office spokeswoman Sgt. Robin McIntosh said the bullets caused no property damage at the complex.
McIntosh declined to say what evidence was collected from the scene of the shooting.
The shooting victim has been transferred to Memorial University Medical Center in Savannah, where he is in stable but serious condition, the release said.
The Sheriff's Office is asking anyone with information to contact either investigator Sgt. L. Albertin at 843-255-3413 or Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIME-SC (274-6372.)
