A 69-year-old Canadian man had a fatal heart attack while driving on Hilton Head Island on Saturday morning, according to Beaufort County deputy coroner David Ott.
James Ross was behind the wheel of a 2006 Volvo driving north on Barcelona Road at about 10:20 a.m. when the car veered off the street and struck a tree, according to the S.C. Highway Patrol. Ott estimated the vehicle was going about 20 mph.
Ross was taken by ambulance to Hilton Head Hospital, where he was pronounced dead. His wife, whose name and age was not available, also was in the car, Ott said, but was not injured. The couple was vacationing on the island. Ott did not know where in Canada they were from.
Because Ross died of natural causes, the S.C. Highway Patrol will not investigate the crash, spokesman Cpl. Sonny Collins said.
