Beaufort Yacht and Sailing Club is ready to break out the big boats.
PHRF racing will start on the Beaufort River at 1 p.m. Saturday. The Frostbite series will continue each Saturday for six weeks.
Two classes will compete. Class 'A' will be for racers and Class 'B' for cruising boats.
Racing in the river, on a narrow course that usually falls between the McTeer Bridge and hospital, can be a challenge for bigger boats, said class captain Everett Ballenger.
Never miss a local story.
"It's competitive, but it's fun," Ballenger said. "People want to race, but it's not the America's Cup. A lot of these boats, people are pretty experienced -- they race Lasers and other boats and will crew on other boats -- so you've got some people who know what they are doing."
The Frostbite series is held twice a year, with the other starting late September. In its fourth year, the series has grown from about five boats to 15 this past fall, ranging from about 22 feet to 38 feet.
Cost for the series is $20 and non-members are welcome. For more details, contact Ballenger at email@example.com.
