A Hilton Head Island teenager was charged with murder Monday after forensic evidence linked him to a fatal shooting last month on Marshland Road, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
Ja'quard Qu'vonte Aiken, 18, was arrested at his home on Aiken Road and charged with killing 19-year-old Cesar Reyna-Reyna.
Reyna-Reyna was shot once outside of his home at about 7 p.m. Dec. 12, according to the Sheriff's Office. His mother found him lying in the yard. He was taken to Hilton Head Hospital, where he was pronounced dead.
Witnesses reported seeing a man in the yard with Reyna-Reyna just before the shooting. Investigators found a shotgun in woods near where Reyna-Reyna fell, and forensic evidence linked Aiken to the weapon, according to a news release.
"They were acquaintances, but we do not know the motive for them being together or for the shooting," Sgt. Robin McIntosh said.
Aiken also faces a charge of possessing a firearm during the commission of a violent crime. He is being held at the Beaufort County Detention Center.
Aiken is a former Hilton Head Island High School student but has not been enrolled at the school since 2011, said Beaufort County School District spokesman Jim Foster. Aiken did not receive a diploma from the high school, Foster said.
Investigators don't believe others were involved in the shooting, but they are still trying to determine the motive.
