Residents discovered graffiti with the name of a 19-year-old shooting victim sprayed on a Hilton Head Island fence Saturday, along with shell casings on the ground nearby.
A Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report said "RIP Cesar Reyna," "RIP Cowboy," "Squad" and obscenities about the police were scrawled on a fence on Wild Horse Road.
Cesar Reyna-Reyna was shot to death in his front yard off Marshland Road on Dec. 12. Investigators are looking for a suspect and a motive.
Four shell casings also were collected along Wild horse Road and Bligen Lane. A deputy noticed tire tracks in the grass and mud "as if someone was driving on the sidewalk when they were shooting," the report reads. A resident said she heard noise at about 3 a.m. Saturday but had assumed it was fireworks from a nearby party.
Sgt. Robin McIntosh said investigators believe the graffiti and gunfire were "a call for attention" but have not determined if the messages or the shooting are gang-related.
