A 37-year-old Port Royal man who faked his employment with an area repossession business was arrested Wednesday by Port Royal police.
Since June, Jonathan Jason Stankowitz had been telling workers at Title Max on 1330 Ribaut Road that he worked for Professional Auto Recovery, according to Investigator Andre Massey of the Port Royal Police Department. He repossessed vehicles and collected about $7,400 from Title Max over six months by using a Professional Auto Recovery employee's name. Stankowitz used to work at Professional Auto Recovery but was fired in June, Massey said.
Stankowitz was charged with felony obtaining goods under false pretenses and failure to obtain a business license in Port Royal. The former charge could result in a fine, as many as five years in prison or both.
Stankowitz was released Thursday from the Beaufort County Detention Center after posting $10,000 bail.
