The Lady's Island-St. Helena Island Fire District arrived Sunday at the home on White Dogwood Road expecting to find a man trapped beneath a dock.
Instead, they found man's best friend in trouble.
Emergency responders were called before 5:30 p.m. to the Lady's Island home after Buckshot, a Jack Russell terrier, jumped in the water. His owner also jumped in to rescue him. Buckshot swam under the dock and crawled between the float and decking and became wedged in, according to fire district spokesman Lee Levesque.
"He refused to abandon his dog, so (firefighters and EMTs) worked quickly to rescue the dog," Levesque said.
Never miss a local story.
Firefighters and a Beaufort County EMT pulled up boards to get to Buckshot. At that point, the owner also came out of the water. Neither he nor Buckshot was injured, Levesque said.
