A man in the Beaufort High School parking lot during a Friday night basketball game dropped a loaded gun while he was being questioned by deputies, leading to his arrest.
According to a Beaufort County Sheriff's Office report, a deputy on patrol at about 8 p.m. during the game against Battery Creek smelled marijuana and saw four men who didn't appear to be students.
As he questioned them, he heard the sound of "metal on pavement" and shone a flashlight to find a loaded handgun on the ground. A 23-year-old St. Helena man was arrested for unlawful carrying of a weapon on school property.
When the suspect arrived at the Beaufort County Detention Center, the deputy discovered the man had lied about his identity after a corrections officer recognized him. The suspect also was charged with giving false information to law enforcement; officers also found there are three bench warrants from the Beaufort Police Department on file against him.
All of the charges are misdemeanors. The man was released on $17,373.75 bond, according to the detention center log.
