A plastic bag delivered to a Sea Pines home brought out the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office Bomb Squad on Sunday, but the package turned out to be harmless.
A couple on Club Course Drive called Sea Pines Security after a plastic sandwich bag sealed with duct tape was found on their doorstep.
Security took the package to the parking lot of a nearby Town of Hilton Head Fire & Rescue Division station, where deputies established a perimeter until the bomb squad arrived. They discovered the contents were baking soda and vinegar, which had been package separately, said Sgt. Robin McIntosh.
If the ingredients had been combined, the chemical reaction would have been similar to the classic school science fair project -- a volcano with bubbling lava.
