Beaufort City Council could give final approval today to a plan to give land between Lovejoy and Boundary streets to a developer.
In exchange, the developer would build a road for the city.
The small triangular plot in front of Fryed Green Tomatoes at 2001 Boundary St. contains a right of way for Lovejoy Street. It would be given to developer Dick Stewart, who owns Town Center and adjoining property and who has agreed to build a road to connect Sycamore Street and Marsh Road behind the right of way. Stewart would then turn the road over to the city, but retain ownership of on-street parking along it.
The connecting road would run between Fryed Green Tomatoes and the property along Boundary Street. That space currently is a parking lot. Drivers frequently use it as a through street, although they are not supposed to, according to city officials.

"Most of what you see now is right of way, and we're trying to square up that front parcel," said Craig Lewis of the city's Office of Civic Investment.
The road would be parallel to Boundary Street, in keeping with the city's master plan that calls for such parallel access along the northern side of Boundary Street.
In return, Stewart would receive a small parcel along Boundary Street that should be easy to develop, Lewis said, adding that he is not sure what Stewart has planned for the property.
Attempts Monday to reach Stewart for comment were unsuccessful.
Town Center LLC will be responsible for the costs of building a two-lane road, with each lane at least 11 feet wide. The city will pay to relocate sewer lines in the area. Lewis did not have cost estimates for the projects.
