A 26-year-old man was shot in the leg at 1 p.m. Monday in the parking lot of a Hilton Head Island apartment complex, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
Deputies found the injured man at The Oaks on William Hilton Parkway.
Soon afterward, a deputy pulled over a car headed toward Savannah. It had been seen leaving The Oaks earlier. Two people in the car suspected of being involved in the shooting were interviewed, according to the Sheriff's Office.
Sgt. Robin McIntosh said their names will not be released unless they are arrested.
Never miss a local story.
The injured man was taken to Hilton Head Hospital for treatment of injuries that weren't life threatening. His name has not been released either.
The victim and two black men were involved in an "altercation" near Building 1, according to the Sheriff's Office. Investigators heard conflicting stories about what happened.
Shots were fired at some point. The victim said that when he realized he'd been hit, he ran toward his apartment, while the other two men left in a teal-green Honda.
A deputy in Bluffton spotted the car on S.C. 170 and stopped it on U.S. 17 near the Talmadge Bridge with help from Savannah-Chatham Metropolitan Police, the release said.
McIntosh said she had no new details to release on the shooting Monday afternoon. Anyone with information can call Crimestoppers at 1-888-CRIMESC (274-6372) or text the word TIPSC to CRIMES (274637).
