Kathy Dalton jumped at the opportunity to open an outlet store in Beaufort for The Porcupine, a Hilton Head Island Boutique.
"It's something that for the last 20 years we've wanted to do, so we're trying it," she said.
When Porcupine owner Avis Rollinson started looking for a second location, Dalton volunteered to man the store that opened this week at 905 Bay St., former home of Boondoggles, which closed in July.
Dalton said they are "testing the waters" of the Beaufort market to see if a more permanent business would be viable. The outlet should be open into the beginning of December.
Having once lived on Daufuskie Island, where she owned property and her husband built homes, Dalton said she enjoys the main store at The Village at Wexford but is excited to join a more "laid-back" community.
"I want that small type of community," she said. "I love that everybody knows everybody."
Hours are about 10 a.m. to about 5 p.m. Monday through Saturday. Times are approximate because Dalton is commuting from Hilton Head Island for the time being.
The Porcupine, which has been in business for 36 years, opens a sale location about every two years to move excess merchandise, Dalton said.
The boutique sells clothing, accessories, jewelry, shoes and other items for women.
