A 25-year-old St. Helena Island robbed a market Tuesday with a beer bottle as his weapon, according to the Beaufort County Sheriff's Office.
A deputy patrolling near Polowana Road saw Jorge Melendez-Majano running down the road "looking over his shoulder as if someone was chasing him," Sgt. Robin McIntosh said. The deputy stopped him and saw a wad of cash sticking out of his pocket and a woman chasing him yelling about money, McIntosh said.
Melendez-Majano also "appeared to be highly intoxicated," McIntosh said.
The woman, an employee of Tienda Y Taqueria La Moreliana, told the deputy that Melendez-Majano came into the market on Sea Island Parkway, forced her to her knees and threatened to smash a beer bottle over her head. She gave him $197 from the cash drawer and chased him as he ran out of the store.
Never miss a local story.
Melendez-Majano's bond was set at $25,000, and Immigration and Customs Enforcement is investigating his immigration status, McIntosh said. Deputies listed his address as Lands End Road; the Beaufort County Detention Center jail log says he is from Honduras.
