Fifteen Beaufort County nonprofit groups received unexpected funding Thursday from the Heritage Classic Foundation, thanks to the success of the 2012 RBC Heritage Presented by Boeing.
The organizations shared $75,000 raised during the 44th annual PGA Tour event at Harbour Town Golf Links on Hilton Head Island. The money was discovered after tournament officials finished accounting for expenses and found extra proceeds.
The foundation had already donated about $1.4 million this year to local charities. It has contributed a total of $23 million to charity since its inception in 1987.
Each of the following nonprofit organizations received a check for $5,000: Arts Center of Coastal Carolina, Coastal Discovery Museum, Heritage Library, The Deep Well Project, Hilton Head Regional Habitat for Humanity, Hilton Head Symphony Orchestra, Hospice Care of the Lowcountry, Lowcountry Legal Volunteers, Lowcountry Habitat for Humanity, Meals on Wheels, Neighborhood Outreach Connection, Operation R&R, Programs for Exceptional People, Second Helpings, and the Week of Champions.
"We have supported each of these groups in the past, and we are happy to be supporting them again this year," said Stan Smith, chairman of the Heritage Classic Foundation Charity Committee. "They are all helping to improve the lives of our area residents."
