Hilton Head Island High teacher Todd White is one of three golfers tied for the lead after the first round of play in the SCGA Mid Amateur Championship at the par-72, 6,444-yard Forest Lake Club in Columbia.
White, Chris Mitchell and Tom Kennaday shot 5-under-par 67s and hold a one shot lead over David Sligh.
White had an eagle on the 480-yard par-5 13th along with three birdies to finish 35-32.
Columbia's Kennaday had five birdies and an eagle on the par-4 fifth hole to shoot nines of 34-37. Prosperity's Mitchell used six birdies and a lone bogey on the final hole to fire 34-33.
For the day, 18 players managed to break par on the short but tight, tree-lined fairways of Forest Lake.
Hilton Head Island golfers Gerry Pascale and Marcus Byler shot 36-38--74s to sit seven strokes off the lead. Bluffton's Jeff Wong is another shot back at 75.
Beaufort's Rob Simmons sits at 76,
The field consists of 120 individuals playing 54 holes of stroke play and will be cut to the low 60 and ties after the second round. Second-round play will begin at 8 Saturday morning.
